Mangroves - Our Priceless Treasure

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Mangrove is a special part of the ecosystem where land and water meet. It plays a decisive role in environmental conservation and also a source of bio-diversity. It is also play an important role in mitigating the effects of global warming and climate change by providing the better carbon sequestration. Furthermore, mangrove forests are also an effective and natural barrier against erosion caused by the sea and from extreme tidal actions. Therefore, planting mangrove is one of a good lesson for us in making this Planet Earth more environmentally hospitable and environmentally sustainable.

This project “Mangroves-Our Priceless Treasure” is a joint effort between Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad and Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society (SWCS).  These two organizations have come together and share environmental conservation ideas and subsequently, implement them in a local scene. This project gives benefit in allow wetlands ecosystem like mangroves to continue to provide man with important ecological services such discussed above. It is also to create the awareness for their ‘wise uses’ instead of destroying or degrading the ecosystem.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the “Mangroves – Our Priceless Treasure” project are:

  • To replant a total 2,200 mangrove seedlings within a year in degraded mangroves areas within and surrounding Kota Kinabalu.
  • To educate participants on the importance of wise use of mangroves
  • To rehabilitate the degraded mangrove area into a healthy ecosystem

The launching ceremony was successfully held at Kota Kinabalu Wetlands on 27 september 2014 attended by both representative from Bank Islam Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Wan Ismail Wan Yusoh (General Manger, Strategic Relations, Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad),  Datuk Haji Zainie Abdul Aucasa (SWCS Presidents) and also participated on this event are Swcs Commetee member, Bank Islam staff and Special students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Datuk Peter Mojuntin. After launching ceremony, participant will do mangrove replanting activity at one of our mangrove replanting site at Tuaran.
